Question
QUESTION: I am looking for homeopathic or chinese herbs to help my 9 year old dog Finster who has an slightly elevated bun and creatin. [kidney failure]

I also would like to know about diet. do i need to decrease protein or can I continue to feed her meat and vegetables. I have fed Finster raw food her whole life.

Thank you

ANSWER: Hello Staci - Yes, you can continue to feed raw with a few recipes below:
also, I would love to see you start Finster on the Cranberry powder supplement and NuVET wafer program... ( you can find the cranberry powder in most pet stores)

Cranberry and NuVET will help to keep the kidney free of infection.....
That is the key for your Finster -  good clean water , supplements , and raw feeding - ( or cooked meats)

Kidney and hepatic recipe for dogs:

The Key is :
***Frequent feedings of high quality simple carbohydrates such as white rice and potatos.
~~~normal amounts of protein should be fed as protein is needed by the liver during repair.
Soy protein and milk proteins are helpful..
Hamburger, Drained  ( or another meat is fine)  (* not too much chicken)
~No liver or organ meats...
Boiled eggs without the yokes..
Unprocessed BROWN Rice..  or White rice...
*mixed daily with some cottage cheese or "soy" plain yogurt.
YOU don't have to use soy but it is good ...
Also, make sure you add some x-tra water to each dish - Water will help the kidney to function.
( This recipe is a good start - You can also do ground chicken or lamb rather than the hamburger)
SUPPLEMENT:
Also, 1/2 to 1 full  NuVET wafer per day for your dog
( depends on size of dog)
QUESTION: thank you.
i went to the vet today, and because he does not believe in raw diet, he wants me to stop with the raw food and cook it. or better yet, he asked me to buy k/d pescription diet which he says is for kidney failure. finster ha never in her whole life had canned food, but he says it is imperative that i give it to her.
her numbers on her bun and creatine increased a little bit, but a friend gave her a hamburger an hour before i went, and evidently that could have affected finster's numbers.
i am confused and uncertain what to do.
also what about someone else's suggestion about chinese herbs and homeopathy. i want to help her from getting worse, but someone else daid i just have to wait til she gets worse and then there are drugs to give her...so confusing!!!
thank you
nuvet for cats
ANSWER: Hi again - Sorry but the Vets have been trained to sell Hill's RX diet -  that is the ONLY nutrition program they get in vet school.
The Science Diet - Hill's Folks wine and dine them and give them Research Labs and even operating rooms built onto the Vet Colleges/ Universities.
It is fine to continue raw.  I cook all my foods for my dogs.  I feel that cats are the only animals that do VERY well with raw feeding.
Look at the recipes I sent you - follow them - Add a small amount of NuVET powder ( 1/2 teaspoon just 1 x per day)
Add some cranberry ----
That's it.
Works great for 1000s of cats.
As far as the chinese herbs - some of them work great but I mainly work with NuVET and Probiotics.
QUESTION: thank you. i believe your answers may still apply, but your response centered on cats and i am talking about a DOG. also they want me to use k/d prescription diet for renal disease. [i do not want to feed it as she has never eaten this, and i believe that all the companies romance the vets]
i have been giving her alot of cottage cheese and yogurt and white cheese. she seems to be doing fine but is that too much dairy???
why do you say not too much chicken?????
i give her 1/2 c hamburger, 1/2 c. potato, and 1/2 c veges one day and 1/2 c. chicken, 1/2 c rice and1/2 c. veges the next day so is that too much chicken [every other day] throughout the day in between she gets cottage cheese, tofu, yogurt and white cheese.
you mentioned probiotics, but you did not advise me what they are, whee to get them, and how much. thank you for your help. it is hard to go against what the vet says, but he is not telling me to do anything but change her food from raw.
oh by the way, i am giving her a renal supplement and omega 3s
this has been two months and as i said her numbers got a little worse yesterday [she is at 31 [27 is the high end and she was 28 last time] and 1.9 [1.8 is hi end and she was 1.8 last time]
thank you for your help. i am so confused as to help her and stop her kidneys from getting worse.
please help finster
Answer
Hi guys - I don't know why I said cat - YOUR boy is a dog....Sorry:
Yes, Many vets don't like raw and I am neutral about raw - I know many folks do feed raw to dogs and cat.
HOW about your meet the vet 1/2 way???  Lightly cook the meats:  Just get the red and raw out of the meat but don't over cook it.  LIGHTLY cook.
I am sure cooking the meats will not hurt your boy at all.
-Low protein does not mean low fat;   ground beef, lamb and dark meat chicken as a protein source are fine.  ( white chicken in moderation because of phosphoros )
-Dairy ingredients such as yogurt and cottage cheese can be added in moderation as they contain phosphorus but are a good source of calcium; some dogs are less tolerant of dairy than others
-Avoid egg yolks and vegetable oils as these elevate phosphoros levels
I hope this helps....
The Cranberry and NuVET are a big help.
A probiotic is something in Yogurt / acidophalus
The Activia brand is great for this probiotic Quality.
1/2 to 1 cup a few times per week will give Probiotic bacteria / The GOOD bacteria for the body.
Good Luck and Keep me posted
