English bulldog, rash (helppp!)

Question
I have an 8 month old English bulldog, he's been dealing with a lot of skin problems since he was 3 months old, i have been feeding him  Royal Canine since he was a  puppy, and it was on and off with the allergies, also the vet told me that he had mange but now is  cleared up. When i took him to the vet (3 days ago) he told me that he is also a bit over weight (he is 61 pounds) and because of that he is limping, well, i went and bought another type of food (natural choice)thinking that it will be better for the skin and weight but now his rash is back and worse than before. He has been scratching like crazy until he bleeds,(only in the belly and paws, little in his chin area)i still don't know what is causing the problem (is the food or something in the grass)and what about hes limping problem?
Please, Please help me I'm getting desperate!

thank you!

Answer
Hi Jenny
Firstly let me start by saying that although I can not give you a 100% guarantee - I am pretty sure that his skin condition is due to pet food.  All commercial pet food is really just junk - no matter how expensive it is.  Your pup needs REAL FOOD.  He needs a couple of good meaty raw bones to gnaw at during the week.  He needs raw meats, mixed with chopped up raw fruits and veggies.
Add some Omega 3,6, 9 oil to his daily food.  Also add a Vitamin E capsule to his daily meal for the next 6 weeks.
There are many great books available now written by vets on raw and natural diets for dogs.  Or, you may want to purchase some already made raw patties/meals such as BARF - www.barfworld.com

I would also suggest that you stop using all chemical flea and worming treatments as these are highly toxic to their blood stream, also affecting the skin and coat.  There is an amazing product called Flee-eze (available at Greenpet).  This is added to meals.  It is 100% safe and effective.  It is the only flee product my dogs have ever known.  You may want to give it to him every second day during summer, and once per week during the colder months.  That is all he will need.
For all natural homeopathic worming go to www.holisticanimalmedicines.com  They have a great homeopathic range for intestinal and heart worm.

Keeping weight down is imperative.  Excess weight adds such huge stress to their joints.  Not to mention that is is a pre-cursor for diabetes and heart disease.  Don't give in to the pleading eyes.  Your dog can not logically work out that he is not getting a special treat etc... all he knows is that there is food and he might get some.  He works on instinct, not logic.  You have to be really firm with this.

Once you change him over to an all raw and natural diet you will notice a much improved dog - healthier, happier, smells nicer, poos are smaller and less smelly and no skin problems present.  Although this type of food may initially appear a bit more pricey than regular dog food, you will save yourself a fortune in vet bills and health complications later in life.

And cut out all snacks and treats.  These are for your benefit, not his!  They are just adding weight gain and skin irritation ontop of what is already happening.  How often are you bathing him?  He really does not need a bath more than once every 3 months.  Too many baths also damage their skin.  Once he is eating as nature intended, he wont smell or feel oily at all.

Many thanks,
Silva.
