Question
I have a 12 year old sheppard/collie cross;
The vet says 2 yrs of life left at best.
That being said, he has the "sheppard bad hips"
trouble getting up, running etc....

The vet says too bad so sad;
I have tried using "Robax" a CDN over the counter back relief drug on him.

I was very surpised to see him bounce around like a pup
again.

This drug seems to keep him out of pain as I
do not want to put him down

WOW! Long story short; are there any adverse effects
that this could cause?

Thanx,

Diane

Answer
Yes, unfortunately there are. Robax has ibuprofen in it, and it's extremely easy to overdose your dog. Signs of overdose are vomiting, poor appetite, stomach pain, black tarry stools, and dehydration. I'd not take that chance.

There are other things you can try. I've heard of Mangosteen being really helpful and then there is a combination of glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) that you can buy at most places that carry vitamins. Bromelain is also worth a try.

Raw chicken feet are naturally high in MSM and glucosamine. Looks gross but they love them! For pain there is a homeopathic treatment for pain and swelling called Hypericum that works too.

Whatever you go with, please stop the Robax immediately. It's just too strong for dogs. Would you keep me updated on your progress?
