Maltese
Maltese
I received my maltese little girl less than a month ago. She is 2 and a half years old and I knew she had tear stain problems before receiving her. I have been cleaning her eyes and spraying them twice a day with a spray that the breeder makes and sells herself (the breeder is Silverbrooks Maltese have you ever heard of these products and/or do you know what is in them). She  only drinks bottled water and she eats Cesar's dog food and PetFresh. The breeder told me she liked cheese so she gets swiss cheese (2 or 3 very small pieces per week) and about a teaspoon of cottage cheese. I was giving her NuVet Plus but stopped because her tearing is not getting any better but I don't know what to try. The vet gave her a clear bill of health but the stains make her look so dirty. I ordered but have not received Anna Pet Tear Stain Remover from castlebaths.com but I'm worried that this is just cosmetic and not solving the tearing problem. Would it make a difference if I were to make her home made food and if so, which recipe? There are so many (most for a price) different ones. I saw in a previous question, you recommended NuVet Plus (expensive for not working) and Pearl for 90 days. Also read somewhere to use natural tear drops in her eyes, would this help? Am I being impatient and not giving anything enough time to work? She came from the breeder as having alway been on NuVet Plus and with tear stains making it difficult to have faith in the vitamins or her tear stain products. I also read that stress can cause the tears to act up and moving from Pennsylvania to California and a new home has to be very stressful. She is with me literally 24/7 goes to the office with me and sleeps in my bed but I do work at my computer sometimes for hours and she just sleeps at my feet on a bed under my desk. What do you recommend and how long should I keep doing what you say before giving up? Can you help us?

Answer
Hi Maltese and family -  I see the number one reason why you dog has tear stains;  the Cesar Dog food ***  You need put her on a quality food;  Once on a good food the NuVET and Pearls can help Wonders!  It takes a long time to get tear stains and some time to get rid of them.
Yes, stress can also cause tear stains..
Please choose a better food for her:  some good brands are Fromm's, Merrick, Solid Gold, Innova Evo - don't buy anything from the grocery store or walmart;
By-the-way, NuVET is a supplement for the whole body and not just to help tear stains;
Give it a chance and see;  Your Breeder says she was on the NuVet but if she had been I would not think her tear stains would be like this ;  Unless the Breeder was feeding a low quality food with too much corn or other fillers;
I have no idea what is in the Silverbrook product your Breeder sells ?  You may want to ask her why you should continue with the product ;

I have a Maltese and love her to death!  Remember, you need to keep the hair away from going into the eyes as that can cause tearing too.
Keep the eye hairs short;

Good luck and Keep me posted at my private e-mail:
