Question
Hi I have a 4 year old shepherd that has had a fistula for almost a year now has been on immunosupressed drugs. I am struggling to keep up with the cost and was wondering if other alternatives are available. He has come off the predinisone due to almost becoming a dog with cushions. And now is taking I'm of cyclosporine 3 tablets once a day. I also feed him IAMS large breed I did go to a fish an potato diet for about 4 months did nothing so went back to the iams since that is what I'm feeding my other two! If you have any suggestions I am open to them Thank you Wendy

Answer
Since I am not a vet, I can't totally answer this question. My suggestion would be to contact a fabulous holistic vet that I know, Dr Gerald Wessner. His phone number is: 352-245-2025. He is outstanding and does phone consultations. If anyone can help, it would be him.

In the meantime, I would recommend putting your dog on a raw food diet if possible. If not, get him off of Iams and put him on a good quality grain free food with an added enzyme supplement with pre-biotics and pro-biotics either included or in a different supplement. It is very important for many reasons; the main one being that it will help keep him in proper upper pH. and help with immune support.

Hope this helps.
