Question
I have an almost 2 yr. old Bullmastiff that we've had for 3 weeks. I take him for lots of walks around our property and I noticed there are spots of blood in the snow. It's one of his back toes that bleed when we're playing outside. He wasn't that active before. He has since lost weight since he's been w/ us. I was just wondering if I should cut his nails? He loves being outside & if he's tired he'll just lay down & chew sticks, so I don't think we're over exercising him.(he's off leash in our yard)But I've also noticed he drags his back paws when he walks. So could it be the snow? dragging his feet? or he just needs to develop calluses? Thank-you for any help. A.J.

Answer
Hi A.J.  - He could have an ulcer ( spot ) on his paw...  Or, he could have a claw that has cracked... it would be a good idea to have a VET look him over.  They can check the paws over and also do his first nail cutting ... They can show you how to cut his claws...
They may need to use a grinder if his nails are too thick..  Many dogs like the grinder rather than the clipper..

You will also want to make sure he is up-to-date on his shots???
