update on crf in cats

Question
QUESTION: I have a question about crf in cats.  In human medicine renal disease is often secondary to immune/immune complex deposition, autoimmune disease or vasculitis treated with prednisone or similar.  I cannot find a good explanation for the pathology in cats.  My questions are multiple; 1. what is a good diet (that the cat will eat) for failure 2. what alternative meds or supplements exist and 3. have you ever seen prednisone or similar used to hault or reverse the process of renal decompensation? - if so, have you seen any papers on the subject - has anyone tried?  I would really appreciate input as I have just taken a crf cat into my home.  Thank you so much.

Jenny

ANSWER: Hello Jenny,
My first reaction to your questions is to respond to #3. Vets tend to use steroids for everything. The big problem here is that pred and other steroids will CAUSE renal failure. I have never really found it to be an acceptable treatment for anything because of all of the hideous  and deadly side effects. There are many alternatives to a chemical steroid. Licorice Root Extract, for instance, is a natural stroll.

The most important thing for renal failure it the removal of all toxins from the system.  This can best be accomplished with homeopathy. Diet is also a factor and an organic raw diet would be my choice. There is an excellent one put out by RAWHEALTH that cats seem to really go for.

I am not a vet and am not inclined to go into this type of serious disease treatment via e-mail. I would recommend that you consult with Dr Gerald Wessner who is an outstanding homeopath. He has aided many of my clients. You can reach his office by calling 352-245-2025. Leave a message if you get his machine because he has a very large equine practice that takes him not only out of the office but out of the country as well. He is very good at telephone consultation.

Keep me posted about your progress.

QUESTION: Sue,

I just wanted to update you on my crf cat.  You recommended calling Dr. Wessner.  I did.  He suggested changing him to a raw diet and gave me the following supplements:  Natrum mur - BID for five days, Pulsatilla BID for three days, Fenal renal support from Standard Process BID continuously, and a Homepathic spray he makes - I do not know what is all included.  Finally, he recommended never vaccinating again - unless by nosode and using reverse osmosis water.

I have not done any blood work on him again, yet; but he is doing quite well.  His appetite is better - the transition to raw has been challenging and is not yet entirely done but I'm working on it.  His energy has improved and he looks great.  Thank you for the suggesting and when I have blood work again I will let you know the results.  Thanks again.

Answer
Jenny,

Thank you so very much for your follow up. I have always been pleased with the results that my clients have gotten from Dr Wessner's therapies and it appears that he has not let me down this time either.  I will look forward to hearing your continued progress.

The raw diet is so very worth the effort it takes to get your cat switched. There is a company called Raw Health that makes an excellent cat diet that they seem to like very much.  If you can find it where you are you may want to give it a try.

Thanks again :0)
