Blood in stool of english bulldog

Question
We have 2 all white english bulldogs (father and son - one is 6 the other will be 2 in Feb). Tonight I saw blood dripping from the younger one's anus when he returned from going to the bathroom. It was bright red. I went out and looked at his stool and he had gone twice... one looked normal, the second was just a few small pieces that were mushy but they had about 3 drops of red blood on them.

We have spent a fortune at the vets thus far so I am trying to avoid going back if I can. I put both of them on Nature's Own Limited Ingredients Diet (Lamb and Rice) in October and think that might be the problem. The older one got an allergy test (b/c he has so many!) so we have a list of the foods he is allowed to eat... N.O. was one of them. So they are both on the same food now. But the younger one has had a lot of loose stool's, he's going nuts itching his ears (I thought it was the time of year and allergies so I gave him benadryl) and now blood.

Starting tomorrow I will feed him chicken and rice for a few days to see if that helps. But is it bad enough to go to the vet? Any food brand recommendations?

Answer
Hi Amy
It may be something as simple as anal gland problems.  The allergy tells me that both of them are not handling what they are eating, or something else in their environment. Have you checked that they may be reacting to a plant or something else in the garden?
The best food for then is raw and natural meats and veggies.  I would cut out the rice and pasta as this only fills them up and can often cause allergies and irritations.
With the younger one and the anal problem - how much blood are you talking about? If it is dripping constantly then you need to get to the vet now as there is some type of internally bleeding going on.  If it is happening when he goes to the toilet, then it seems to be more related to the anus or anal glands.
In either case you need to keep a close eye on it.  I can only speculate and can not advise you as I am not there to see it, nor am I a vet.
Try him on a product called "Anal Gland Kit".  It is a homeopathic formula and comes with psyllium husks to add to daily meals.  This will help to clear any impaction or infection in this area.  We have it on our website:  www.roxysworld.com.au under the "Wellness Products" tab.  It will last you a while.

With the food I would suggest you get them both onto a B.A.R.F. diet.  If you are in the USA - go to - www.barfworld.com  There you can find a distributor in your area.  If you are in Australia - go to - www.barfaustralia.com.

BARF is great food - it is REAL FOOD like our dogs and cats are meant to eat, not processed rubbish that is harming their health.  I know that N.O. is organic etc... but it is still processed food with fillers added to it.  Changing to a raw and natural diet you will notice:
smaller, nicer smelling poo
slimmer, happier, healthier dogs
better looking coats and good skin condition
more money for you, because you will be spending less on vet bills and all the medications that go with this.

I do hope this this has been helpful.
Take care,
Silva.
