Dogs Tummyache

Question
The dog food my 4 year old, 10 lb. weinerdog eats is Purina 1 and occasionally gets small amounts of fruit and vegetables and very small amounts of meat. She occasionally eats something she shouldn't have and gets a bellyache and vomits (mostly water.) This ALWAYS happens on Christmas or the 4th of July or any long holiday weekend or when we're snowbound and the vet is gone. What can I give her while I am waiting to decide if emergency care is needed? Pepto Bismol seems to help but she doesn't like it so I mix it with raw egg but I don't know if raw egg is the best choice. What do you recommend giving a dog for a non-lifethreatening tummy ache or until I can get her to the vet when symptoms persist?

Answer
How about we start by trying to avoid the stomach aches first?

Dogs can't digest carbs so feeding fruit and vegetables just takes up stomach space you could have meat in. You don't say exactly which fruits and veggies you feed but there are a few that could cause problems. I'd suggest writing down what she eats, like a diary to see if the same foods come up when she gets sick.

I'd also suggest stopping the fruit and vegetables totally. It would be best to switch to a raw diet of meat, bones and organ meats and drop the kibble as well. Have you ever looked at your dog's teeth? They were made for ripping meat, not crunching kibble or apples.

Since it happens on holiday weekends I'd suspect someone is feeding her things on the sly. Is someone slipping her some beer or sausages maybe? LOL!

Raw eggs are great for dogs and I give them to mine often but probably not a good idea while not feeling good. However, Pepto has salicylates in it and dogs shouldn't have it. It's too easy to overdose a dog on it.

Get some ginger root capsules to keep around, fresh water so she doesn't dehyrate and allow her to eat grass if she wants to.

I think I'd lock her away from the next party as well so she stays out of trouble.
