Answer
Hello Dana -

Given the age of your dog I would give a safe assumption to say that the lack of bladder control is to be expected.

As pets mature, the same as humans, sometimes age is not kind and they lose daily body abilites. One of the first bodily functions to dissapate is bladder control. This is quite normal.

Your dog should be put on a Senior Diet Formula if he is not already. These specially blended foods have extra levels of vitamins and minerals that help with maintaining the body systems, bones, teeth and muscle structure. There are 2 (two) supplements I recommend you add to your dogs diet. You can purchase these from a pet store or from www.onlynaturalpet.com online.

The first is called "Vetri-Science Canine Plus Senior". It is a smoke flavored multi-vitamin that has enteric coated digestive enzymes and various extracts and vitamins for geriatric dogs. These extra supplements aid the dog in immune system balancing, detoxification of multiple body systems, circulatory, liver, heart and brain functions. You can purchase it in capsules of 90 or 180. It will run about $15.00 for the 90 capsules.

The second is called "Vetri-Science Bladder Strength for Dogs". This will help maintain bladder health control in older dogs. It will help strengthen the bladder muscles and will provide anti-microbial support in case of bacteria or infection that may be a problem for geriatric dogs. You can purchase it in capsules of 90 and will run about $25.00.

I have a few clients that have geriatric dogs, they have tried these formulas and have had success, especially with the bladder strength formula.

The best advice I can give is to comfort your pet and enjoy your time with him. You can add a drop of Lavender oil or Chamomile oil on his favorite place to snuggle. This is will calm him and give him a more restful sleep.

If you notice abnormal temper changes, emotional behavioral changes or if the pet becomes lost and confused you may want to look into "Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome". You would be able to notice this syndrome right away. Its basically, Alzheimers Disease for pets. I make a Bach Flower Essence & herbal blend remedy which may help your pet. Veterinarians usually prescribe Anipryl which may be more harmful to your pet then good. Please contact me if you have more questions or if you think your pet may be suffering from this syndrome.

I hope this information has helped you and your pet.
