constant hacking

Question
My dog is a 13 year old teacup poodle.  She is my baby.  She has had a hack for several years.  After she started going blind, she would "hack" to get my attention, like fussing at me.  The past month, the hack has been constant.  So bad to the point, she keeps me up at night, and she has lost her urine a few times.  No doubt due to the stress on her insides.  The vet gave her an anti. and a liquid of some sort.  It has gotten a bit better, but my diagnosis is something within her sinus.  She will hack to the point of trying to cough up something, but nothing ever comes out. I have had to put her in a room alone at night. Breaks my heart.  She has always slept with us.  Any natural products I can give her?
Thanks

Answer
Hi Wendy,
The incontinence can be caused by her being an older dog.  There are homeopathic remedies that you can get to assist with this.  One great product is Bladco.  It is relatively inexpensive and will last you many months.  This should get her urine problems under control.  Or you can use any homeopathic spray/pills for childhood incontinence/bed-wetting - these work the same way.
I would also look at some herbal or homeopathic products to aid her liver, as this too will aid her eyesight.  You can make her a tea of Milk Thistle (St Mary;'s Thistle) leaves and Rosehip Tea.  Put the herbs in a cup, pour boiled water to fill up cup, and cover with saucer and place in fridge once cooled.  Then give her 5 mls 3-4 times per day.  This will help her liver, kidneys and adrenals as well as boost her immune system.

In regard to her "hacking" - Do you think it is some sort of sinus problem or allergy? We have a herbal blend known as Allergic Rhinitis blend.  The herbs included in the allergic rhinitis mix are all directed toward nourishing and strengthening the immunity to resolve the underlying oversensitivity.
Ingredients : Chamomile, Euphorbia, Fenugreek, Horseradish, Vervain and Alfalfa along with the Bach Flowers Walnut, Impatiens and Rock Rose.
I can understand your upset over this, especially as she is now unable to sleep with you.  Give these products a try and let me know how it goes.  You can find similar products in most health food stores, or we can make up the mix for you.  Have a look at our website for further info in you are interested.
Without a proper diagnosis from the vet it is very hard to know exactly what may be causing her hack, so these are my best suggestions at this stage.
You may also want to include a couple of drops of Colloidal Silver in her daily meals.  This will help to keep her immune system healthy, and therefore more resistant to infections and other problems.
I hope this helps.
Take care,
