Question
I have a 11 month old French Bulldog, Gus who can't stop scratching himself. His hot spots are under his arm pit and his face. It gets to the point where he is losing his hair around his eyes and in his wrinkle. His arm pit is all red and scratched up with some areas being juicy and swollen and others with scabs. We have been to the vet many times and  he has received two steroid shots, which seem to settle things down for a bit, and he is on oral prednisone 5 mg. The oral medication seems to calm the scratching down compared to when he isn't on it. But he still scratches. We also wash his arm pit every other day with Universal Medicated Shampoo that we received from the vet. We have changed his diet to a grain free diet. He eats Natural Choice Venison Meal and Potato formula. We pour wild salmon oil we buy from Petsmart over his food. When he receives treats they are grain free as well. Right now he is just receiving dried liver as treats.

Any suggestions on what might help our little guy? It just looks so painful :(

Thank you!
Tricia

Answer
Hi Tricia and Gus.  I bet little Gus may be dealing with Environmental allergies!  It can be things around the outside of your home.  Many times we can't control the allergens that are hitting our pets.
PLEASE remember that I am not a Vet.
Please continue the Steroid pills.  Ask your Vet if you can slowly lower the dosage over time.

Looks like Gus is on a very good grain free food and treats.
I am sure Gus has a major Yeast overgrowth thru his skin.

Here are some things you can do that should help.  You may never be able to cure this 100%.
Many times my suggestions will help 50 % or more.
If we can lessen the outbreaks that would be very positive!

1.  give a 100 IU of Vitamin E  ( 1 per day)  IT is very hard to find such a small dosage of Vit E in the stores: YOU may have to special order it.  ( ON-line or ask CVS or Walgreens to order it for you.... NO more than 100 IU per day ...
Long term -

Continue with the Salmon oil.
Only use 1 tablespoon per day of the Salmon oil.  ( Mix into one of his meals)

2. Next, Give this baby some NuVET Plus - 1 1/2  wafers per day:  YUM YUM good - Allergy blaster and immune system booster.   ( This will help to re-build his weak immune system to fight off the allergens)   ALSO, helps to heal the skin and re-growth of hair.

( ASK the NuVET folks for some Hot spot spray ( it's about 10.00 and all you need is a litte spray on some itchy areas)  HELPS to heal and keeps them from scratching.  ( I love it)
It's all Natural, too.

3.  Wipe the paws - EVERY time he comes in from outside -
Wipe With an Unscented baby wipe " huggies " one of the good brands for human babies.
He may be allergic to dirt, pollen or even grass.
( UNDER his arm pits, just use an unscented baby wipe.
Try not to use that medicated wash more than a few times per week.
( Make sure you Vet knows your are working with me)

4.  Please make sure he is on some PEARLS - Probiotic....
( GETS rid of Yeast)

You can buy PEARLS at Walgreens and CVS:  ( Give 1 PEARL per day for 90 days)
