yeast in ears

Question
I have a 3 year old St Bernard which is having problems with her ears.  In October I took her in to see a vet because she was shaking her head a lot. After swabbing her ears I was told she had yeast in her ears. I got octic solution to clean them and some dexa-drops. Last week her ears started looking bad again so we went back to the vet and they swabbed her ears again and said it was yeast and a bacterial infection. They gave me a triple antibiotic ointment.  They don't seem to be getting better.  I am wondering if I could give her acidophelous capsules or if that would help? Or do you have any suggestions on what to do with her.
Thank You,
Nancy Goodman

Answer
Hello Nancy -

I am very sorry I did not respond to you sooner, I have been battling a sinus infection and have just not been myself.

Yeast can be treated easily without a prescription medication.

Avoid Dry Dog foods containing poultry-by-product, meal, meat-by-products, corn syrup, caramel coloring, rice flour,
wheat gluten, corn gluten and sugar.

Give her asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant, parsley, squash, brussel sprouts, celery, green beans, yellow beans, cucumbers, collard, kale, lettuce and spinach mixed with her food.

Begin adding Garlic powder to her food. Garlic is an anti-microbial and will help kill the Candida and bacteria. Don't be afraid to sprinkle it with a heavy hand, dogs love Garlic and she should eat it up right away. The only draw back to adding Garlic to the food is flatulence. It may be a little stinky but the Garlic is doing its job by pushing the bacteria through the system. Just keep a couple clothes pins handy. At the first sign of illness you can add this to your pets food or keep her on it daily. The Garlic will not harm her, it will help her keep a stong immune system.

Yes, adding Acidophilus to her food will greatly help and rid the body of Candida. You can give her a "human" brand or you can purchase it from a pet store. You can also keep her on the daily since she the yeast is reoccurring in her system.

The adrenal glands produce a natural steroid that can help reduce inflammation when ears get infected.  Giving pets vitamin C can help the adrenal glands work more efficiently. Dogs weighing under 15 pounds can take between 100 and 250 milligrams of vitamin C a day.  Pets 15 to 50 pounds can take 250 to 500 milligrams a day, and larger dogs can take 500 milligrams once a day.

You can also try the herb Neem. It is a great herb and is primarily used as a blood detoxifier for humans and animals, It can be made into a soap which you could wash your pet with on a daily basis, tea which can be added to your pets diet or a lotion. Either way it a wonderful herb and I highly recommend it along with the other remedies I have listed above. You can purchase Neem products from the website www.doggiesparadise.com. It is fairly priced and well worth it.

If you choose not to begin a regimen of Neem, the Garlic and Probiotic should clear the yeast from the system in about a week. If you have any other problems or questions please contact me.

Clean the ears by pouring a small amount of apple cider vinegar into the ear canal, massage the area, then gently wipe the inside of the ear with a cotton ball.  Do this twice a day until the ear is better.

I hope this information has helped you and your pet.
