dog food for liver disease

Question
We have a 8 yr old cocker and we were told in Jan. that she had high liver count.  They put her on Denamarin 225 mg and a Vet prescription dog food by Royal Canine.  I can not afford both.  I have looked and looked for dog food that I can get her that will be better for her other than just any kind of dog food. What would you recommend?  I have another dog that will be eating the same dog food.  I was looking to purchase Wellness dog food for Seniors, but wasn't sure and they also have a white fish dog food that is for adults.  Would these be good decisions ?  Do you have any recommendations.  I love this dog and it kills me that there isn't more that I can do for her.  I want her to be comfortable and right now I feel like I'm hurting her because I can't pay out that kind of money for her meds and food and still be able to feed the other dog.  Thank you so much for your help and your time.

Answer
Paula I am so sorry to here about your girl. My first suggestion would be to find a holistic veterinarian and treat her with specially prescribed supplements. In the long run it may be less expensive.

The other option would be to make your own dog food. It really is cheaper that way and you have total control over what is in their food.

Here are some links that may help you as well.

All the foods that you mentioned are really great foods and would work but if you want to save some money I would make your own. That's what we do and we make it in bulk and then freeze.

I hope everything works out for you and your cocker. I love the breed! Please, please, please if you have another questions do not hesitate to ask.

My Best,
Wendy
