Holistic Diet for Cavalier

Hi I have a 5 month old Cavalier.  Yesterday he had his first seizure.  It was a very scary experience.  Anyways, I really want to start making his own food but want to make sure he is getting everything he needs.  He has never been a fan of dried dog food.  Any sort of advice or suggestions would be great.  Are there any foods that can help prevent seizures?  We still don't know what caused it.  They are checking his liver.

Hello Erinn,
I am sorry to hear about your Cavie. I would bet my life that the seizure was caused by vaccines. They are a main cause of seizures. Vets have plausible deniability that the vaccines cause them because the bulk of the long term severe health issues do not appear for several months after shots are given and sometimes even longer. Cavies are very susceptible to health issues, probably because of the rather limited gene pool that they originated from. DO NOT VACCINATE HIM FOR ANYTHING EVER AGAIN! Your vet has the ability to sign him off and keep him legal but many of them won't because of the money factor. If your vet won't work with you, find one that will, preferably a holistic one.

Also,you are correct in your thought about feeding him a raw food diet. It is important to eliminate beef from his diet as well as wheat, corn, soy and dairy. These can cause seizers in allergic dogs. We have eliminated seizures totally from several dogs simply by changing the diet (even those that have been on high doses of seizure medication for many years). There are several pre-prepared raw diets available. I don't know where you are, but calling around may track one down, or go on line.

Making your own raw diet is an art form, but there is an excellent book called "Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats" by Kymythy R. Schultze that has recipes as well as wonderful information over all.

Also, eliminate all chemical toxins such as chemical heartworm and flea protection. For these I recommend homeopathic heartworm nosodes and Critter Oil respectively.
