Skin Condition

Question
I have a Golden Ret. and on both sides of his back hips he has two spots, his right side is a lot worse then the other.  He skin started out a little darker then normal, he was loosing a little of his hair in that area.  Now the one side there is almost no hair and the skin has tuned a really dark red color.  He is not bothered by it, but I don't know what it is.  It started to show in early May.  I have taken him to two vets who think it could be Seasonal Flank Alopeica.  It seems like the color is getting darker.  Do  you have any ideas of what this could be, and what I should be doing other then the Melaton his is taking?
I have not seen any improvment at all.

Answer
Hello Teri -

I will agree with the vets and venture to say it is a form of Alopecia.

The Melatonin would be the best option as far as natural supplementation. As long as the hair loss and skin condition is not affecting your pets daily routine or current health, I don't forsee a real danger.

Try applying a little Aloe Vera gel or juice on the areas of hair loss and see if it helps with color change and actual hair loss. You could actually make a tincture of Rosemary and Aloe Vera which would help stimulate hair growth if it was a concern. It is safe if your pet ingests the Aloe as it helps to heal from the inside out. If you pet suffers from dryness along with the hair loss this will greatly benefit your pet.
