Question
Q. My Puppy has an eye infection and he keeps scratching at it and I was wondering if there was anything I can do to get it to heal faster as well as keeping him from scratching it.  It just seems to keep getting worse because he will not leave it alone.  Do you have any suggestions on what I should do or use on it.

Answer
Hello Crystal -

It is very difficult to keep a dog of any age from scratching their eyes with an infection present.

Be sure to investigate the eye infection to be sure it is not a serious condition. Puppies are prone for infections but you should be sure it is not something that will develop into a chronic condition. Be sure to check with your Veterinarian or Holistic Provider.

The best advice is to begin by adding Garlic powder to your pets food. Garlic is an anti-microbial and will help fight infection and bacteria. Don't be afraid to sprinkle it on with a heavy hand, dogs love Garlic and he should eat it up right away. The only draw back to giving Garlic in the food is flatulence. It may be a little stinky but the Garlic is doing its job by pushing the bacteria throught the system. Just keep a couple clothes pins handy!

You may also make an infusion of the herbs Goldenseal and Eyebright. Do this by pouring boiling hot water on the herbs. Let them steep for about 10-15 minutes. Sieve the herbs and store liquid in a glass jar. Old spaghetti jars work well for this. Apply to both eyes with a clean cotton ball. Be sure to throw the used cotton ball away, do not reuse it in the infusion or you will spread the bacteria. Always use a clean cotton ball when wiping the eye area. It is okay if you get th liquid in the pets eye, it will not harm him. Continue this for about 10 (ten) days. This should suppress the itch and stop him from scratching.

If the eye is dry and irritated you may use moisturizing eye drops as well. Administer the drops 3 (three) times per day for at least 19 (ten) days.

I make a remedy for pet eye infections and have had outstanding results, if you are interested I can ship it ASAP. Eye usually is healed within 5 (five) days.
