Question
toy fox terrier puppy 4months old: has consumed a small 1 x 2 inch piece of chocolate from the easter basket is this going to make him really sick and maybe kill him as we were told that chocolate kills dogs?

Answer
Hello Kathi -

This will not kill your pet or cause severe harm but may cause him to have a few loose bowels movements. Chocolate increases heart rate, similar to the effect of Ephedra in humans. Chocolate can harm your pet if it is eaten daily but with small bites like this, he should be just fine.

He may also vomit depending on his system. Just keep an eye on him, if he still has loose bowels after 48 hours of chocolate consumption you may want to call your veterinarian and inform them of the situation.

I don't see a big problem with this be sure you give him plenty of water and dry food. You can even give him a few pieces of bread or crackers, this will help absorb the choclate in his system and reduce the chance of loose bowels.

I hope this information has helped you and your pet.
