Question

Bella-Marie
My 4 year old poodle cross has been diagnosed with autoimmune deficiency - most of her toe nails are deformed, this has only recently been discovered. She constantly licks her nails and hates it if you touch her feet (which I now understand why!) The Vet says to just cut the nail when it comes lose.  Today I saw her limping once again and her nail is very lose and wobbly.  I feed her boiled chicken and add fish oil, she also gets "My Dog" canned food.  She was eating the cat kibble for a long time as won't touch dog kibble - but I have stopped this habit (cat kibble), but wonder if it did some damage. She seems to be getting worse over this last month. Any advise will be very much appreciated.

Answer
Greetings!

Your being in Australia could be an issue, but since the product DGP originated in Australia, I'm wondering if its companion product here in America, N-K9 is from there as well.  Find out, and if it or some other herbal immune support formula is there (such as Herbsmith's immune supplement), get your girl on it immediately. If you need me to, I can mail supplementation, but if you can find it there and save shipping costs, do so.
Also, put her on either a high quality grain free kibble diet with an added enzyme and probiotic formula, or better still, a balanced raw food diet.  The vet, Ian Billinghurst, who wrote the original book, "Feed Your Dog a Bone" is Australian, so there is possibly more there than you may know about; maybe even frozen,pre-made diets like there are in the US.

Have you been vaccinating her? STOP IMMEDIATELY AND NEVER DO IT AGAIN!

Now, lets talk about this not eating what she needs to eat. Know this: 1) It takes 3 days of going without food for a dog to get as hungry as we get between meals. 2) It takes 5 days of going without food for a dog to have any  physiological changes, and 3) there's not a dog on the planet that will starve its self to death for a cause. Feed her what is needed for a healthy immune system and EXPECT HER TO EAT IT! Your expectation is a great deal of the problem as well as your willingness to placate her.

By the way, also go to a health food store and get a biotin supplement for her. It will help with the toe nail issues.

I guess that's about it for now. Keep me posted. As I mentioned, let me know if you need me to ship you supplements.
