Question
neighbors dog had close call this weekend when this 3 lb maltese got very sick and was found to have 2 large kidney stones.  Surgery was mon am & he is now home and recuperating.  The stone they gave us for a "souvenir" was the size and color of a plump green pea!  Wondering what would be the reason for the green color(they don't have pathology results yet). Also, how best to prevent a re-occurence.  Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Hello Sharon -

There are two different types of kidney stones struvite and urate. The more common struvite stones that are composed of magnesium ammonium phosphate. Others are made of calcium oxalate, calcium apatite, cystine, or ammonium urate. Each form has its own different peculiarities as to which breed is most often affected and what factors affect the formation.

The minerals found in the kidney stones are what cause the green color.

Once a pet has a kidney stone, chances are they will develop them again. The best recommendation to get the pet on an ALL NATURAL diet with a food brand such as Nutro. These natural foods do NOT contain preservatives, chemicals, by-products or fillers and assist the body over all. Alot of prescription brand foods say they dissolved kidney stones but actually cause further damage to the pet and increase chances of kidney stones occurring at a faster rate. Natural foods can be found in most pet food stores and are less expensive then prescription blends.

Keep alot of water available for your pet. Water, with any living creature, helps to detox the kidneys and keeps then soft and supple as they should be. Water is an internal rehydrator. Some pets with kidney ailments must have water subcutaneously injected under the skin because they do not drink enough.

I make a remedy for pets with kidney concerns and it has worked very, very well. It may not fully prevent kidney stones but the blend has good diuretic action which allows for proper functioning of the kidneys. This does not allow for minerals to build up in the ducts of the kidneys, therefore not allowing stones to fully form. The tonic allows for good circulation throughout the kidneys which is greatly needed with kidney concerns. The stronger the blood flow the better and stronger the kidneys function with less problems.
