cat illness

Question
I have found six baby cats that I am raising.  I am a fanatic in feeding them organic natural foods.  I one cat Bubba seems to be getting sick for some reason.  His symptoms are he vomited two days ago (yellow), tired, and although he tries he can not meow.  I took him to the doctor about 3 weeks ago and he gave him an antibiotic which seemed to work.  But the symptoms are back again. All my cats are in door cats and the only thing I changed is the type of litter I use.  I switched to a chemical clay to just clay.  I love all my animals dearly and because I eat only organic I want to give my animals the same quality of food and good health.  I really hate putting him on an other antibiotic.  Any suggestions?  Thank you.

Answer
There are many possibilities for what's causing Bubba's problems, and you have to take him back to vet to rule out medical problems.

I agree that it's good to feed organic food if possible.  Equally important is that you're feeding a complete diet.

Although it is possible to raise dogs on a vegetarian diet, cats have to have meat.  Are you feeding a variety of meat to Bubba?  Cats must have the amino acid taurine, which can be hurt by cooking, so you might want to give plenty of turkey (high in taurine) and occasionally raw meat, or give a taurine supplement.

You should also add a vitamin and mineral supplement, and be sure he's getting plenty of Omega 3's - fish oil is about the best source, and I give my pets fish oil capsules that are prepared for human beings, so I know they are good quality.

How much to give?  As a very rough guideline, you could use the amounts for children, and adjust to an amount proportional to Bubba's weight.

If you want to prepare your own food, Strombeck has a book about preparing diets for cats and dogs.  I recommend it.

I hope this helps.  If you have more questions, get back to me.

Cordially,
