13 yr old Scottie Mix with lameness in hind leg

Question
Our 13 yr old Scottie Mix has recently come up lame in her left hind leg.  The vet said it could be a possible ccl rupture.  Xrays showed no injury to hip or knee, but we did not do any other test to confirm CCL.  Vet recommended we take a wait and see approach with limited activity, weight loss ( she's down 2 lbs to 29lbs) and no stairs, as opposed to surgery.  She is placing more weight on the foot each day it seems and is still her joyful, exhuberant self, which is part of the problem.  She insists on running, jumping, twisting and rolling although she is learning "slow" and hears "sit" a hundred times a day. She is exhibiting no outward signs of being in pain and seems pleasant, but frustrated with her lack of mobility.  My question is- are we fooling ourselves into thinking this could get better on it's own? Would she benefit from acupuncture? We're terrified of putting her through surgery as she has a plethora of other health problems including Kidney and Bladder stones and takes Ursodial daily for a blood disorder initially thought to be Cushings.  Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.

Answer
Hi Cindi-  I wouldn't put her thru surgery... Yes, the area can heal on it's own.  She most likely will have arthritis in the area in question.  She should be able to manage  well on a baby asprin per day... Ask your vet about giving 81 mg baby Bayer asprin once per day... Just for a short period of time.... aids in relief of inflammation.  Make sure you check with the vet before you give the baby asprin.

Just keep on working with the " sit" and rest approach to her activity.  I have a Scottish Girl, too.  VERY HEAD strong little doggies.. My girl is now just about 11 years old.

BEST wishes to you...
