Question
I have a 3yr.old Maltesse. For the last three weeks, I noticed that she has been scratching at both of her eyes. They are red around both of them. Is there anything over the counter that I can give her to help relieve the itch?

Answer
Sorry this took so long to answer, but for some reason it never got to my inbox.

Is she only rubbing at her eyes, or is she itching elsewhere too?
Anyway, she could be troubled by air borne allergies in which case I would go to a health food store and get a locally produced raw honey. You need it to be as local as possible because it would be likely made from the vegetation that is irritating your girl's eyes and therefore help boost her resistance.

Also, there are several homeopathic allergy remedies available. A company called Homeo-Pet produces some effective ones as does Newton Labs. Newton also produces a product called Eye-C which may be helpful.

Increase her trace mineral intake (Water Oz's Water of Life is best) as well as her anti-oxidants.

As a fascinating point of fact: the Maltese originated on the isle of Malta which is a limestone island.  Because all of the wells on the island are drilled through solid limestone, the drinking water there has an extremely high rock based trace mineral content. Because of its genetic origins there, the Maltese has a very high requirement for rock based trace minerals; higher than any other breed. Lack of trace minerals is often the core cause of eye staining in the Maltese.
The product "Water of Life" from the Water Oz company contains apx. 89 different rock based trace minerals because it is made from ionized rock. The minerals in it are broken down to the point where a plant breaks down rock in order to absorb the nutrients through osmosis. This makes the minerals in Water of Life 99.999% bio-available to people and pets. It's an awesome product.

Another thought is this: if she keeps loosing hair around the eyes after treating for allergic responses, you may want to have a skin scraping done to check for mites as they begin to show up on the skin around the eyes first.

I hope this information is helpful, an again, sorry for the delay.
