Bathroom problems

Question
I have a beagle/jack russell one-year-old female. She is the greatest dog, but has one problem. She is well trained and never goes to the bathroom in the apartment. She does, however, wake up two-three times throughout the night, whining and needing to go out. I take her for a 10-minute walk, which feels awfully long at 2:30 in the morning. I always take her out around 11:00 p.m. before bed too.

Any ideas on what can help - or is this just a result of having a small dog in an apartment?

Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hello Jimmy -

I have a client who has 2 (two) beagles in an apartment and had the same trouble as you.

I think it is mostly because beagles have small bladders and need to urinate more frequently. My client has stopped leaving a large amount of water available for her pets about an hour before bedtime. She then walks them and hasn't had this problem as often since she removed the water.

I'm not saying to let your pet go thirsty, just cut back on the amount of water you are leaving out. Make sure when you walk your pet before bed that it is a good 15-20 minute walk, this will also help as far as fully emptying the bladder.

I hope this information has helped you and your pet.
