Question
We have an 8 yr old femaile black pug Tula that has seizures about every 4-5 weeks. Normally she will have a series of seizures over a 2-3 day period, and then be OK for another month or so.
She is on phenobarbital and potassium bromide with very little results. At first we thought she was doing better, but the seizures still continue. We adopted her about a year ago. The former owner told us she was in good health.
Obviously she was not. Her seizures are grand mal and occur
about 3-4 times a day for 2-3 days.
We feed her Science diet, but are looking into a better food. The previous owner fed her kibbles and bits.
What can you recommend to help her. She is a very sweet dog and is also deaf and has one bad eye. She really is our
special needs pug.   thank you

Answer
Hi Patrick and Tula -  I LOVE PUGS!!!! One of my most favorites...
Ok, the vet is doing the best he/she can with conventional medications.... Phenobarbital and the potassium bromide are a good combo for your gal.  She will need to have her blood tested often and the Vet will need to adjust the drug up or down..
Sorry, there are not many other choices on the market for grand mals seizures.  They have a few drugs that are so expensive, folks can't afford to buy them.

Yes, a better food and some good supplements will help your gal's general heatlh and immune system.

I would like you to start her on some Wellness Core / mixed with the current Science diet food.... Do this mix for at least 30 days - AFTER about 30 days - see if you can go 100% to the new Grain free food - WELLNESS Core.

Also, I would like to see her get some Vitamin E ( just a small dosage of 50 IU ) Only 1 every-other-day, long term.

Last, Please get this PUG kid onto the NuVET supplements... This is an immune system Blaster and Booster.  It sure would be some help to her system by taking  (1 1/2) NuVET wafer per day-  You can break the wafer treat up into 1/2 and give her 3 1/2s per day..
I bet she will love this as a treat.  MOST dogs love it and if they don't you can mix into the food.

NuVET is about .60 cents per wafer / a 60 count bottle is 39.00 and a 90 count bottle is 55.00
