Question
QUESTION: hi, i have tried now for two days with my lhasa apso dogs the bitch is 15 days into her season and is two years old. my boy is 3 years old. she stands and puts her tail to the side but he just licks her for ever. then when he does mount she always yelps and runs away. i have tried to help but this just puts him off altogether. i separate them for most of the day but put them together for half an hour. once in the morning and then again in the evening. is there anything you can suggest as i am running out of time with her heat. thank you

ANSWER: Hi Lisa. I'm afraid that you may have missed it with this heat if they haven't tied yet. 15 days may be too late. Your only two options may be to either sedate her, or use A.I. There's really not a whole lot you can do when the female behaves this way. Try earlier her next heat. Start trying on day 11 and see if that doesn't help. If it doesn't and she still refuses the male, you may have to resort to what I suggested. Good luck.

QUESTION: hi again. i had given up on them mating but last night walked into the kitchen and there they were, back to back locked. this is now day 17 can she still get pregnant.
im sure i have the dates correct but i started counting from her swelling up and my males interest in her, her bleeding actually started two days after the swelling began. have i calculated wrong do you think. thank you

Answer
Hi. well, anything is possible. If she was standing for them, and they tied, then I wouldn't count her out yet. Some girls just ovulate later into her cycle than others. Most people start to count when they see blood. Like I said, she may have ovulated late, and may become pregnant. Treat her as if she is until you know for sure. On day 50 of the pregnancy, you can have an x-ray done to tell for sure. Good luck!
