QUESTION: "My one in a half year old Yorkie has been for the last two days with his penis out.  Is something wrong b/c he has never been erected for so long.  He has licked it but i have given him a bath - blow dry his hair - played with him and it stays the same.  Plse let me know, thank you."

ANSWER: It is probably that way because of too much hair on the end of his sheath and now it cannot go back naturally. You need to gently pull his sheath back down over his penis as you work the excess hair out of there.

If this isn't the problem, he needs to be seen by a vet.

QUESTION: I tried to put the sheath back but it won't go in --is there a way i should do it?  Could it be something serious if it does not go in?

Hard to describe, but I sort of work at it like I am unrolling a pair of balled up socks. Start on one side, and sort of work your way around the penis as you gradually pull that skin and hair back out that has doubled up on itself.

I always worry that the penis will dry out too much or FREEZE here in Minnesota (at least during our winters). I would think it would be more open to infections, too.
