me and boo
QUESTION: I have a 9 month old female Chihuahua, I feel like she is very smart. I have been litter training her since ive taken her home at age 3months. she does great if she is confined. She is about 4lbs, just to let u know how small she is. well we love to spend time laying around on my bed playing, watchen tv ect. If I leave the room or go out for a few hours she would pee on my bed. so I thought oh my y she cant jump off my bed its to scary for her. so little by little I started to help her with that and now that she is a little older and she has gotten taller she can jump off the bed. I've trained her with the word off.
The thing is she still will release herself on my bed, even when im sitting there with her. she has done that 2 times. I've thought of everything..maybe she doesn't like her litter box anymore, or maybe its not clean enough. so i decided 2 things Ill start taking her outside in the morning when she gets up and ill stay on top of her litter box even more than before. well thats not working.I don't understand how she can not get it that here she is sitting on my bed and she has to go pee and the litter box is 2 feet away from her and she wont jump off and go pee. If I'm in the room ill notice she is moving around and ill tell her off or ill put her down and she'll go in her litter box and go. there are times when i come how and she pee's on the floor next to the litter box. when im in the room with her she will use her box..this is frustrating..when i caught her peeing i scold her and tell her no and take her to her litter box and tell her this is where u pee..If i take her out side and tell her to go pee she will and then ill say now go poop and she will and she will come back to me and we will go right in. Please help me break this habit of her peeing on my bed. and why she does it? Please please help us..

ANSWER: This is about leadership.  She is challenging you for the position of top dog.  Top dogs get the best sleeping spots, and the higher, the better.  Spay her if not already, then obedience train her.

The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.

QUESTION: I was thinking of not spaying her because of wanting to breed her. How do I stop her from challenging me.. she is an obedient dog.So let me ask you..when she gets on my bed are U saying she feels like the top dog. because she knows this is some place that I rule? and she is challenging me for it by peeing on it. I have not allowed her back on my bed since this happened tonight.Right now Im laying on my bed and she is laying in her bed watching me as i relax and go online. So doesnt that energy tell her Im the top dog. because i wont allow her to come on the bed. If she tries I tell her to get off. I will call her when i want her to come on the bed.so that tells her im in control. right?

Answer
Yes keeping her off the bed is a way of showing your leadership.

I strongly urge you never to breed her unless you can train her out of it.  We have plenty of well behaved healthy dogs, and it is absolutely wrong to breed any with behavior or health problems.
