Wellness Dog Food

Question
Dear Diane,

I have a 5 month old Weimaraner.  He was on Eukanuba when we bought him.  After doing research to pick a good dog food, I settled on Wellness (Just For Puppy).  Chose this because it was high in crude protein and crude fat as suggested from the weimaraner needed from my research and also was had a mix formulated for puppies.  My wife and I gradually changed him over mixing with the old over about a two and a half week period.  On and off the change over, his stools were loose.  Last friday, he went in for some booster shots which gave him diareah.  About the same time, we ran out of the eukanuba and started feeding the wellness by itself.  His stools have been loose this week and someties diareah.  The color is light to medium brown with no signs of it being a parasite.  He has also been very gassy during the whole process of changing him over.  Wondering how long we should give the food before trying something different and/or should we consider taking him to the vet.  He is otherwise in good health and acts playfull.

Thanks,
Chuck

Answer
It sometimes takes a couple of months to fully adjust to a new dog food. And if this one is higher digestibility then it could be making him gassy for awhile. You can try adding some unflavored yogurt to his food to see if that helps. Could be that he won't adjust to it at all, if his upset tummy continues, I think I'd try another dog food. You could also give him a bit of immodium for awhile to settle his tummy.
Good luck
Diane
