my 3 year old welsh corgi

Question

Bella
I have 2 old cairn terriers, 12 and 15 (male and female) and I adopted my female welsh corgi when she was almost one, after losing my other corgi to cancer. She is sweet but hogs everything, and it's gotten way out of hand. The old terriers just let her do what she wants and try to stay out of her way, but she won't let anyone show them any attention, and she won't let them eat. She is very good about coming when she's called, and even does tricks. But I don't know how to make her stop bullying my older dogs, and she's getting worse all the time. What should I do? (I am with my dogs all the time so I want to do something about her behavior!) Thank you, Julie

Answer
The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
