Question

Belle
Hi, my 14 year old miniature dachshund, who has always been a little rotund, has lately been especially round in the stomach. The only change in her feeding recently was a new type of food(we'd had a bad snow storm and I couldn't make it father than a local convenience store for dog food).

She's not showing any signs of discomfort though, even when I touch her belly and she is still eating. Her stool seems normal as well so I'm not too concerned that it's GDV(I'd take her to a vet immediately if I thought it was). She is drinking a lot of water though and eating pretty quickly yet still seems to be hungry when she's finish, sniffing at the bowls of our other dogs and constantly in the kitchen sniffing at the dog food bag. I also noticed that her stomach was rather firm to the touch. I hope to take to a vet very soon, but in the mean time do have any suggestions or ideas what might be going on?

I also thought I should mention on a side note that she does have a herniated disk in her back though I doubt it has anything to do with this.

Thank you very much,
Annie

Answer
Hi Annie and Belle,  I am thinking possible Diabetes?  Sounds like she has some of the symptoms. I would get her into the Vet for some blood work.  Have the vet also check her Liver.
I don't think the herniated disk is related to this.  Please get her into the vet ASAP.
Please let me know what the Vet says.... Diabetes or ?????
