Our dog is 16 and about two days ago she started having a strange ordar. I am think it is coming from her mouth. She started acting diff and today has not moved much & when she does she is very slow. She also threw up today. We are not sure what may be going on. Any suggestions? Thank you

Hi Barbara,

Your dog needs to be examined by your veterinarian. The odor you've been smelling might mean she's having an abscess, periodontal disease, a cracked tooth or some other oral problem. Though at 16 years old your dog is too old to undergo the rigors of being knocked out to have a dental cleaning, she might need antibiotics if she has an infection, and she could well be in pain.

Even though your dog might not feel like eating, it's important to keep her hydrated. If you can't get her to drink water, offer her small but frequent amounts of jello, warm low sodium chicken or beef broth, or little cottage cheese mixed with cooked white rice if she's able to keep the liquids down.

Hopefully you'll be able to get a vet appointment tomorrow, since this has been going on for a number of days.
