Question
my chocolate lab is having her period and there is a very foul smell from the blood,is this normal?

Answer
A normal "heat" or estrus cycle in a dog occurs every 6 months.  A bloody discharge and/or clear mucus, as well as a swollen vulva can be seen during this time.  The discharge should not smell.  If there is a fould smell or a white discharge, please go see your veterinarian.  This could be vaginitis (a common bacterial infection) or pyometra (infection of the uterus).   Sever cases of pyometra can be fatal.  If you do not plan to breed your dog, then have her spayed.  This will prevent any further heat cycles.
