How do I groom my mixed breed terrier?

Question

Hi Susan!
I recently rescued a wonderful russell terrier mix. He is about 2 years old. They say he is mixed with Norfolk terrier and Jack Russell, but I am not convinced he's got a tiny little Norfolk in him since he is 28 lbs! He looks like a very large, very long haired jack russell. I've never heard of or seen a 28lb jack russell so thats why I think he is mixed with something larger.
His coat is also somewhat mixed which makes me question how to groom him. He's got a very thick and long, wiry coat around his neck, shoulder and rump area. His rump especially is what I would consider fully blown and in need of a good stripping, but then the hair around his mid back and sides does not seem to have any kind of soft undercoat like his rump.
We live in very hot and humid Florida so I would like to thin his coat out a bit so we can enjoy more time outside. How would you suggest I approach this?
I don't have many pictures of him yet so I'll attach a couple that I took with my phone so far.
Thanks for taking the time to read my question!
I appreciate it!
Thanks,
Sarah

Answer
Hello Sarah,

Congratulations and good for you to rescue a little dog in need.
OK, on grooming him.  One of the best tools to use is a slicker brush.  They are great for use on long coats, medium coats, wiry coats, flat coats and curly coat.  There are many types available and I suggest you get one with a comfort handle for you, the Master Grooming Tools Flexible Slicker Brushes from PetEdge are wonderful.  Also, I would get a FURminator deShedding Tool. These remove undercoat and loose hair without damaging the healthy top coat. It also leaves coat shiny and very manageable.  For his pants or back-end, you can trim with scissors to make a rounded curve in line with his hips to his hocks.  Trim his tail in the same curve to neaten the appearance.  Another thing to get would be an instant coat conditioner that quickly penetrates thick hair for faster comb-outs.

Hope this helps you.
