Question
QUESTION: hi can you help, my dog charly is ten months old and has just had her first season.  in the very first two days of her season she jumped over next doors wall where a dog she likes to play with was staying she was only only there a couple of secs i ran round to get her and my neighbor was already carrying her out to me.  I was sure she was not mated and so were they as they were in the house.  But she finished her season three weeks ago and i have noticed that her genital area still looks swollen and her nipples are swollen and like small breasts under them where before they were completely flat.  She is fine in her self and eating well.  Could she have a hormone imbalance or something if she is not pregnant.  And if she is pregnant how long is it before a vet can tell you for certain.  many thanks mandy

ANSWER: Could be a phantom pregnancy,  most bitches get someof the symptoms of pregnancy after heat.  She cant have been mated with in that small amount of time. A vet should be able to tell you at 3-4 weeks.

QUESTION: hi thanks for answering my last question, today i would like to ask, about dog aggression, i look after my daughters puppy who is 7 months old when she is at work, she is a staffordshire bull terrier the same as my dog who is ten months old,  recently i have noticed that missy my daughters dog is being quite aggressive towards my dog who is very passive. It often seems to start as playing and can end up in a bit of a fight, its not gone far enough for either dog to get hurt because they stop soon as i tell them, but my younger daughter was scared by this behavior yesterday.  Missy is very intelligent, but can be quite naughty and is very lively.  She responds very well to clicker training, but when she is not actually having training seems to think that she can do her own thing.  i was wondering if she is being more aggressive if she is due to come in season because apart from when they first met five weeks ago they have been getting on really well, until this week.  Any ideas on how to stop this, im just shouting no and trying diversion tactics, which work at the time but she seems to forget.  many thanks mandy

Answer
Hi.

Use a water pistol,  when the playing starts to go nasty.  This dog may benefit from being neutered.
Also of course,  bitches do get more aggressive towards other bitches when they are on heat.  There isnt much you can do about this hormonal behaviour,  again neutering will solve it.
