Question
I have a 16 yr old, male Schnauzer, weight 20 lbs and he has suddenly started wetting in the house.  He is blind and deaf but can go outside by himself and has been doing so for 4 years.

Can I check his blood sugar by using a human tester?  If so, what should it be?  I called the Vet and he wants $55 to do a blood sugar test.

Please advise.

Answer
Marilee-

Yes, you can use a BG monitor and test strips to test your dog's blood sugar. You want to draw blood by pricking the inside of his lip. Here is a site showing exactly how to draw blood to do the reading: http://www.sugarcats.net/sites/harry/lipprick.html#anchor17927

It is not AS acurate as a vets test, but it will do to monitor. of course, if your test shows anything the slightest bit unusual, you would want to get him into the vet ASAP so they can retest and do a diagnostic evaluation.

here is a chart showing the acceptable levels of glucose in non-diabetic and diabetic dogs:

Good luck! I hope he feels better!
