Shar-pei

Question
My friend has a 7 year old Shar-Pei and he has always thrown up bile over the years here and there but lately he is heaving more frequently in the last 2 weeks.  Dr. says, "that's the breed!"  but something is off.  She gives him dog food with cooked rice and cooked chicken (protein).  I don't know much about dogs but this is my best friend's pup and I am trying to get any insite that I can for her.  She is very upset and worried.  Can you tell me what the heaving means?  Should she get another doctor?  Thanks so much, Donna

Answer
There could be something physical going on, so it might not hurt to have a second opinion, but vomiting bile is often due to feeding a poor-quality kibble. She should be feeding something like Eagle, Canidae, Wellness, or Solid Gold. The first ingredient should be a meat protein, or preferably a meat meal, there should be a minimum of grains in the product, and NO by-products.

Also, some dogs just do not tolerate having an empty stomach, so if she is feeding only once a day, she should try feeding him twice a day, or at least give him a few pieces of kibble before bedtime.
