Question
I recently adopted a puppy from a local shelter. The pup was originally listed as a Terrier mix. Everyone I have talked to has had far different ideas. She has been said to be Border Collie, Dalmation, Spaniel, and Blue Tick. My vet believes she is a hound mix. I think she's a spittin' imiage of an English Pointer. My question is about her size. The above dogs range from small to large. Is there any way to guess her adult size? She is approx. 4 1/2 to 5 months old. She weighs 15 pounds, and is 16 inches to her withers. My only concern with size is house manners. I don't mind sharring my lap with small dogs, but I don't want a large dog jumping directly on top of me. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give!
Thanks!
Adriel

Answer
Hi Adrial;
Yout Vet's guess is probably closer to right. He sees all breeds an all mixes of breeds.
Do you mean 16 inches at the top of her withers?
From where her shoulder bones peak?
For that height, 15 pounds sounds light.
You should be able to feel her ribs when you run your hands down her sides, not too hard, but if you can see the ribs then she is a bit underweight.
Big difference beyeww a Dalmation and a Spamiel. Dalmations are slick haured and spaniels have long, usually curly hair.
You never can tell, she may have a bit of all thise inn her.
As far as a big dog and house manners,,,,,, she is going to jump up on you, only if you do not teach her not to.
I had a 100 pound German shepherd that was a house dog, and she was the epitome of good manners. she was very well trained.
If you are not tht familiar with obedience training, I suggest you look for a Petdmart or Petco in your area, and check into their basic obedience classes.
They are not that expensive, especially when you consider what you get.
Both my sister and my daughter have Dalmations that are house dogs. hey had good obedience training, and are very well behaved. They were taught no to jump up on people, and they Don't !
I don't recommend the training books, because you never know if the person who wroye them really knows anything about training dogs. Anyone can write a bok.
Here is a good website where you can check on tha corect weight etc. Lots of good information in there.
go to,,

PS, I have also know people that had Great Danes, in an apartment. No problems at all with a well trained dog.
Write anytime you feel I cam help.
