Strange behavior in house suddenly

Question
A few mornings ago my 6 yr old chocolate lab was in bed sleeping with my husband.  I heard a loud bang and Drake came down the hall to the living room with his head hung low and looking scared.  I called him up to me on the couch and was shaking.  I thought he fell out of bed (which is 2' off the floor) and my husband doesn't remember what happened as he was asleep.  This was 3 days ago.

Since that time Drake continues to act uncomfortable in the house.  He paces or just stands still but doesn't want to lie down.  A few times when I have been on the computer and had him lay down beside me he would bolt up and stand by me - very shaky.  He acts like he doesn't want to be in the house or sleep.  I had him lie down with me on the couch last night because the night before he whined a few times and wouldn't lay down.  He slept for a while on me but several times he left the couch and walked around.  I kept calling him back and he kept leaving.  His eyes look sad and he keeps his ears flat.  He eats fine - meals and snacks.

When I take him outside or for a drive or a swim he is completely normal.  His energy level is great and he has lots of fun and acts like the dog I've always known.  I am very concerned - this morning he is still very reluctant to lay down and still looks upset.  Please help.

Answer
That does seem very unusual. I am not sure what the bang was that initially scared him but that is probably the source of the insecurity. Try to find out what it is that happened. See if he is more nervous in some areas then others. I would start by simply positive reinforcement in the area that makes him uncomfortable. Start with a less stressful situation and work your way up. Keep a leash on him so you have control and he cant play the avoidance game. Always reward and treat your pup when he "settles down" or "relaxes". Always leave a session in a positive manner and never push your pup to do more than he can.

While I am not sure what is going on to make him so fearful this could definitely help. Remember, dogs just need to be pushed out of some OCD behavior and they'll never look back.
