yellow lab eating drywall

Question
I have a 13 year old yellow lab that has recently started to eat drywall.  She has lost a little weight but is still eating a lot.  Why is she doing this?

Answer
Hi JoAnn,

The simple solution is a crate or keep your dog in a safe area where no harm can come to your dog, or your walls.

Separation anxiety can cause a dog to be destructive. Older dogs can develop a condition known as "Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome", which is like the dog version of Alzheimer's. With this condition there are personality changes, and a dog who did not have separation anxiety in the past, could develop it.

Weight loss in an elderly dog is reason enough to have a vet exam, but that an this new odd behavior is double the reason for an exam.

Best of luck,
Patti
