Question

Bailey ( female lab) a
I have a 3 1/2 month old female lab not spayed yet. she is very mouthy and bites everything as come to expect. My husband and I recently brought home another puppy an 8 wk old male lab/shepherd mix which is neuter. when they play it is kinda rough, she is at least 30lbs and he is 13lbs (but small). When they play she bites down on his neck and trys to shake him like a toy. Sometimes he yelps, but she doesn't always let go.

Is that normal? She has a sister(biological) that she gets to see at least every two weeks and this is how they play, but i am worried that she could possibly kill him by accident. How should we handle this kind of play?

My second question is my 8wk old male is very possesive and aggresive about toys/chews. If he is playing with something and my lab trys to take it from him or walks by him he growls and then attacks her. If he does it to her she just lets him take it. What shoud we do about his aggression issue with toys/chews?

Answer
Rough play is normal, but until he is quite a bit bigger, I would break it up when she grabs him by the neck.

As for the toy, I would work at teaching him you are in charge, well, both dogs.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
