deworming Rough collie pups

Question
My Rough collie pups are just 10 days old. At what age do I start to deworm them and how often. I know of some breeders that have overdone this to the point a pup gets sick. Also, what do I use to deworm Collies-they have a high rate to become toxic , or so I hear. Can I use just the over the counter pinkish solution from any fleet farm ?

Answer
Collie's are indeed susceptible to problems caused from some chemicals (anti flea agents, ivermectin, anesthesia to list a few) as do other breeds. Aussie's , shelties, Irish Wolfhounds. There is an old saying, white feet, don't treat. :). So it's good that you asked. I would deworm with safeguard and only with safeguard. 1 cc per five pounds of body weight beginning at fourteen days. For three days straight. Repeat every two weeks. Treat mom also. HOWEVER, I am not a vet, so PLEASE give your vet a call and double check. To the best of my knowledge safeguard is the most safe, most effective deworming product on the market. But if these were my pups, I would give the vet a call just to be sure. If he ok's it. Treat them at six weeks for five days straight. So that would be deworming with safeguard liquid, one cc per five pounds of body weight broken down accordingly, for three days in a row beginning at fourteen days and repeated until the sixth week, at which point you would deworm for five concurrent days. You can buy safeguard at most petstores. Anything else over the counter is a waste of time and money and potentially dangerous for this breed. More than likely if you were to purchase dewormer from your vet, this would be what he would sell you. Again I have to reemphasize. give your vet a phone call first.
