Question

My puppy Trigger
I have a 10 month old LARGE (92lbs) mix breed neutered male. He has learned sit, down, back (from the gate or door), speak, shake, go find your toy, get on your pillow & how to open the screen door to come in or go out(taught himself this) fairly well. He still needs reinforcement. Problem #1 - I'm mostly the one that plays with him-throwing balls, sticks, toys, tug of war. I have been unable to teach him to "drop it". Problem # 2 - When I just want to pet him, he continually tries to put my hand in his mouth,(he doesn't do this with my husband or sons) & sometimes he gets too rough & breaks the skin, but I wouldn't classify it as aggressive biting, I tell him "no teeth" & he stops, but when I try to pet him again he does the same thing. And so we go over & over this. Problem #3 - He wants to constantly throw a paw on me, whether I'm standing (paw on leg) or sitting (paw in lap or on arm)and I have been unable to break this habit. Recently I have caught him putting his paw on my 12 y/o Lhasa who has severe arthritis & hip displasia, causing her pain. He has his moments of rambunctiousness, but is usually a calm dog. But due to his size I know I have to break these habits. Any ideas?

Answer
The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. YOu have to deny your attention every time he bites or paws you.  This will take many, many corrections, but if you are completely consistent about it, eventually he will let you pet him without biting or pawing if that is the only way he can get any attention for you.  Excalim ouch every time he puts his teeth or paw on you.
