Interest in a new dog :)

I am a 21y/o female that has a huge interest in getting a dog.  I do not however know the slightest thing about the up and coming breeds and cross breeds.  I would love to have a small dog (one that doesn't get any larger than 25/30 lbs because of where I am residing).  If you would be able to give me a list of potential breeds that fit into that category I would greatly appreciate it!!

I'd love to give you a list. Narrow it down for me. What do you want to do with your dog? How do you want to incorporate him into your life? Obedience? Flyball? Jogging partner? Mostly couch potatoe? Do you want very friendly, or not so attention oriented? Guard dog potential or just to alert you? Grooming? non shedding? Long or short haired? What are the five most important aspects that a dog should have for you? Inteligence? Trainibility? laid back temperment? low grooming needs? Water oriented? House or apartment? Help me out and I'll get that list for you. I love these kinds of questions :)
