Question
Hi Sarah,
I a the proud owner of a 2.5 year old mixed fox terrier, jack russell and who knows what else.
About 2 months ago we noticed the sides of her nose getting what we thought "dirty". It was warmer and she was spending a lot more time outside.
This has continued to spread and her entire nose is no dry, rough (like sandpaper) and beginning to crack. THere are no blisters or "oozing" just really really dry and gray in color (her nose is usually black, shiny and cool).
We have tried, shae butter, cream and are currently using vitamin E.
THe doc mentioed Lupus, but I'l not seeing a dry crusty nose as a symptom.
Any light you could shead would be appreciated.
THank you very much.
Judy

Answer
Some dogs naturally have a dry nose.  I had a labrador once that no matter what we did her nose would dry out and crack, sometimes to the point where it was bleeding.
I would make sure to keep the area lubricated (good ol' vaseline will be as good as anything) and clean it every so often to guard against an infection occurring.
If there are any other symptoms at all return to the vets for a full work up as there are a number of illnesses that can start out with a dry nose.  However as long as she is otherwise healthy and checks out fine at her yearly check-ups when she is vaccinated then I dont think you have anything to worry about.
Hope this helps
Sarah
