Question

Mini parti schnauzer
We currently have a 14 yr old female schnauzer & are looking at getting a puppy.  The puppy is a female platinum parti schnauzer with black on one half of her face & white on the other.  Will the different colors surrounding the eyes possibly cause eye problems later on?  Our 14 yr old is getting cataracts.

Answer
Colors have nothing to do with cataracts. Juvenile (congenital) cataracts and what we call "early-onset" (developmental) cataracts are hereditary. Senile cataracts are not hereditary, but the cause is unsure, but is most likely due to abnormal body processes.

Puppies should have had their eyes examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist at eight weeks of age, and the parents should be examined yearly. If these have not been done, look elsewhere for a puppy. http://amsc.us/index.php?option=com_contact&Itemid=42

Also, at 14, your dog is pretty old to be bringing in a new puppy, as the puppy will attempt to pester the ol' dog unmercifully, either through play or "just for fun". If the older dog is still able to fend off unwanted advances, then it may be okay, but at that age, it is usually better to wait until the old dog is gone before bringing in a new puppy. Make sure the old dog has a place to go to get away from the unwanted pestering of the new little devil when it wants to sleep.
