Weird behavior from my American Pittbull.

Question
My American Pittbull, Ace, has been acting very strange the past week. He is a very well trained dog, just shy of a year old. The past week when we are laying down watching tv he has kind of been frantic. He walks around the room in circles, sniffs the ground like he has to use the restroom. Goes to the window like he wants out. He also moves his ears alot, almost a twitch. I let him out to use the bathroom, but when we come back in he continues to act the same. He usually has no problem going into his crate when we leave but the other day he whined and fought a little like he was scared. He has never done that before. Is this just something they do or should i be worried?

Answer
Something is obviously going on, but the question is WHAT. The two primary options are something physical with the dog or something environmental.

Dogs frequently go through a secondary fear period at around 18 months of age, but that time element is quite variable and certainly could happen at around a year of age. However, there doesn't appear to be anything that is really frightening him.

You don't say where you live, but animals can be very receptive to noises, vibrations, and tremors. There could be some kind of construction in the area that he is hearing, or possibly he is feeling/sensing some very minor earthquakes. Also, I live in the upper midwest, but the smoke from the California fires is becoming quite evident in our skies. Maybe he can smell that and it is making him nervous.
