Dog sleeps but wakes at night

Hi,
My dog is almost a year and a half old and for the past 3 months he has been driving me and my girlfriend close to insanity. Every time i sleep at home which one day out of two my dog in the middle of the night wake us up by doing sounds and with some barking. I take him out usually 3 times a day and he gets some exercise daily. He sleeps in his crate but not in my room because he is too noisy with his breath. I feel i have tried everything to make him sleep i does not miss on anything (i dont think) and yet... could he have something against my new girlfriend ?? Some people told me about downers .. for dogs!! and i was wondering is it alright to use it with him and if so where can i get some ?

Carl..dont use medicine on your dog for this., Make sure he doesnt eat past 6 pm or so, put the crate in your room. He wants to be close by. If you have to, use ear plugs. And ignore him when he does it. It should stop after a few times. Dogs are just like babies and if you go to them when they cry, they will keep doing it.
