You answered question about my cairn terrier and said I should buy a crate.  I have a crate, and she doesn't soil the crate.  But, I don't want her to live in the crate 24 hours a day.  How do I communicate to her that soiling the dining room is not acceptable?

Well what you can try and do,is to keep her outside until she does everything,and praise when she does,then repeat every couple of hours

Since you don't want to crate her all day,you can still just crate her at night and when you are out

Another thing to watch for is alot of sniff,esp in one spot,as that is often a sign they have to go out,take her out right away if you you catch her acting that way
