Question
Hi. I've recently purchased a male boxer puppy.  "Duke" is now 10 weeks old.  This is the first time I've ever owned a male dog before.  I've been noticing lately that when he goes "potty" outside, the hair around his penis is very wet and stained green from the grass.  He has a bad habit of wanting on my bed and then I have small green stains on my sheets.  It's kind of irritating to have to wash my sheets every other day.  I was wondering if it is safe to trim the hair shorter on the penis.  My friend told me that the hair protects the penis and should not be trimmed.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Marcie and thanks for your question.

It would be fine to trim the hair, but make sure that you don't cut it to close, as you can cut the skin.

You can also wipe that area with a doggie wipe (yes, they do sell them, lol) daily to keep it clean.

Duke is not old enough yet to realize that he needs to clean this area, but will soon realize this part is "down there" and he will take care of it himself.
